EARTHLIGHT THIRD-PARTY NOTICES =============================== Observed sky additions (build 72) -------------------------------- Measured-star background: NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio. Gaia DR2: ESA/Gaia/DPAC. Source page: https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4851/ Source: https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/vis/a000000/a004800/a004851/milkyway_2020_16k.exr This 16384x8192 map represents measured stellar positions, brightness and colour; it is a catalogue visualization, not a telescope photograph. Observed Atlas additions (build 70) ---------------------------------- Earlier sky panorama (retained asset): ESO/S. Brunier, https://www.eso.org/public/images/eso0932a/ Creative Commons Attribution 4.0: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Adaptation: filtered, dimmed, registered in galactic coordinates, and faded at polar/zoom resolution limits. No endorsement is implied. Moon colour map: NASA Scientific Visualization Studio / Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4720/ (2025 colour mosaic). Mars, Jupiter, Saturn maps: NASA 3D Resources, public-domain repository assets, https://github.com/nasa/NASA-3D-Resources . These are historical processed maps, not live observations. Source URLs and SHA-256 are bundled beside each image. Land cover: NASA MODIS IGBP annual classification 2024, NASA GIBS browse map, https://gibs.earthdata.nasa.gov/ . Native 500 m data resampled to 4096x2048 or 8192x4096 display grids, depending on device; exact published category colours recovered as class IDs. Source dates and sampling details are included in vendor/earth-landcover-igbp-2024-4k.json and vendor/earth-landcover-igbp-2024-8k.json. Sequential colour tables: Viridis/Magma/Inferno by Nathaniel Smith and Stefan van der Walt; Cividis by Jamie Nuñez, Christopher Anderton and Ryan Renslow. Matplotlib palette tables are CC0; exported unchanged to 8-bit display values. Earthlight application code and original content -------------------------------------------------- Copyright (c) BAKAR. Three.js -------- Earthlight bundles Three.js r160 and selected official Three.js example modules, including OrbitControls and post-processing passes. The small neutral tone operator in js/photographic-output.js is adapted from Three.js r180. They are based on NASA elevation and imagery data. Source: https://www.solarsystemscope.com/textures/ License: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ NASA material ------------- Earthlight includes locally prepared material from NASA public science and imagery sources: * Blue Marble: Next Generation December Earth imagery (4K, 8K, and 16K release derivatives), plus a local regional tile pyramid prepared from the original eight 21,600 x 21,600 NASA December 2004 base-map parts. The source is a cloud-free monthly observation composite with nominal 500 m sampling, not present-day imagery. The source has no baked topographic lighting. Local Web Mercator tiles preserve approximately 611 m equatorial sampling (finer with latitude), use 4-pixel gutters and bounded runtime residency, and remain available offline. Source URLs, hashes, projection, and adaptations are in vendor/earth-detail/source.json. Credit: NASA Earth Observatory / Reto Stockli. Source: https://science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-observatory/blue-marble-next-generation/base-map/ Media usage: https://www.nasa.gov/nasa-brand-center/images-and-media/ * A 4K land-elevation derivative of NOAA NCEI's ETOPO1 Ice Surface global relief model (1 arc-minute). ETOPO1 is distributed by the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information. Bathymetry present in the source is discarded; only land elevation is bundled. * Material-data textures prepared from NASA Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS) renders and their official colour maps: MODIS/Terra Land-Water Mask (16K land/water mask), MODIS combined IGBP Land Cover Type Annual, and MODIS/Aqua NDSI Snow Cover Monthly Average. These are packed into a single material atlas and are used as data, not as pictures. The atlas stores land/water, land-cover and snow-cover information separately. Source products are named above; the in-app About panel explains their use and limitations. * A NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory / HMI solar quick-look image, locally cropped into the Sun sprite. * A local subset of the NASA HEASARC Bright Star Catalog, 5th Edition preliminary table (BSC5P). NASA imagery and data are credited to their named missions and data systems. NASA names and marks do not imply endorsement. See the in-app About panel for source descriptions and limitations. Natural Earth ------------- Bundled water bodies, borders, coastline, and populated-place vectors use Natural Earth data. Natural Earth states that its vector map data is in the public domain. Source and terms: https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/ GeoNames -------- Bundled place names (data/towns.bin) are derived from the GeoNames allCountries export: about 516,000 populated places with a recorded population, down to settlements of a few dozen people. GeoNames is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). Attribution to GeoNames is required and is given here and in the in-app About panel. The data has been reformatted and reduced for bundling -- names, coordinates, population, country and feature class are kept; alternate names and other fields are not. Feature classes are also used to mark which entries are sections of a larger place rather than settlements in their own right. Source: https://download.geonames.org/export/dump/allCountries.zip Licence: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ ESA Gaia, and open cluster memberships -------------------------------------- Bundled open-cluster member stars (data/cluster-stars.json) are the membership lists of Cantat-Gaudin & Anders (2020), A&A 633, A99, "Clusters and mirages: cataloguing stellar aggregates in the Milky Way", table J/A+A/633/A99/members, retrieved through the VizieR service at CDS, Strasbourg. The astrometry and photometry beneath those memberships come from the European Space Agency mission Gaia (https://www.cosmos.esa.int/gaia), processed by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC, https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/gaia/dpac/consortium). Funding for the DPAC has been provided by national institutions, in particular the institutions participating in the Gaia Multilateral Agreement. Gaia data are released under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 IGO licence. The bundled file is a reduction: sky position, magnitude and colour only, converted from Gaia G and BP-RP to Johnson V and B-V so that one renderer can draw these and the Bright Star Catalogue under a single magnitude-to-size law. The conversion is recorded inside the file itself. VizieR ------ The VizieR catalogue access tool, CDS, Strasbourg, France (DOI: 10.26093/cds/vizier). The original description of the VizieR service was published in A&AS 143, 23. Optional network data (not bundled) ----------------------------------- When a visitor explicitly enables the relevant feature, Earthlight can request NASA GIBS imagery or related science-layer data. Provider attribution is displayed in the app. Those materials remain subject to their providers' terms and attributions.
